Hummel figurines began life as the artwork of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel. Her drawings and pictures of children were discovered by a publisher in Germany, Franz Goebel, who began to printing her art on postcards.
Goebel later began producing figurines under the auspices of Sister Hummel’s Convent in Siessen. Production began in 1935 and continued right through until it was discontinued in 2008 (although it is likely that production will begin again this year). Sister Hummel died in 1946.
The figurines themselves are porcelain, bisque fired and then dipped in glaze. Painting is done using oil paints.
